Attractions and Things to Do on Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake offers residents and visitors access to the incredible natural beauty that Virginia has to offer. However, while there’s plenty of outdoor fun to be had, there’s so much more here! From tourists to seasonal visitors to full-time residents, there’s something here for everyone.

Smith Mountain Lake

We’ll start with Smith Mountain Lake itself. Stroll down to one of the lake’s sandy beaches and soak up the warm summer sun, or take the boat out into the blue waters and swim, fish, or ski to your heart’s content. You’ll find multiple boat rental companies, too.

If fishing is more your thing, you’ll be glad to know that Smith Mountain Lake is one of the nation’s top destinations for striped bass. Other species you might catch include large and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bream. Schedule a half or full-day fishing tour, or take part in one of the many fishing tournaments the area boasts throughout the year.

Off-the-Water

Moving away from the lake, we have a wide range of activities and attractions. Head over to Lynchburg for Amazement Square, or hit the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. Bedford is home to the D-Day National Monument, and the Booker T. Washington National Monument is located near the lake, too.

If you prefer dinner and drinks, you’ll discover a wealth of restaurants around, from fine dining to more casual options. For budding sommeliers (and those who just love a good glass of wine), the Virginia Lake Country Wine Trail offers endless hours of enjoyment. You’ll also find Apocalypse Ale Works in nearby Forest, Virginia.

Of course, the Westlake Country Club offers ample golfing fun nearby, as does Mariners Landing Golf and Country Club.

From wine to golf to fun in the sun, you’ll discover a world of enjoyment here on Smith Mountain Lake!
